I’ve been sketching and drawing for as long as I can remember. My first artist hero was Andrew Wyeth whose paintings look so real you can almost touch items in them. My next hero was Robert Bateman. As a teenager with no training, dreaming of painting like Mr. Wyeth or Mr. Bateman was like wishing I could fly.

There were years of frustration until I learned from a man in Louisiana that painting is largely technique. The great news is that technique can be taught!

While my children were in school and daycare, I went back to college. Although I have earned a BFA, I finally mastered painting technique (in watercolor) by taking private lessons once a week in the evenings.

Lani Anderston, sailingDue to my husband’s job, my family has had the opportunity to live and travel in various regions both in the United States and abroad. I started painting “solo” in Indonesia over 15 years ago and have never looked back.

Now, I teach painting as I was once taught. My classes are relaxed and very casual. As each student evolves into his or her own style and creative technique, I sneak in bits of color theory and composition. I believe people assimilate knowledge as they need it, especially in painting.
